Volta NY 2017

Tammy Salzl
Storyland

We are proud to be presenting Tammy Salzl’s Storyland at VOLTA NY 2017. Salzl is a visual storyteller based in Montréal, Canada who tells contemporary fables that examine the emotional and psychological complexities of modern life.

For VOLTA NY 2017, Salzl will present a new suite of paintings and a single channel video featuring unrepresented or misrepresented female characters from fairytales, myths, Greek legends and Shakespearean tales. Set within a grassy, forested glade at dusk, Salzl’s vignettes offer alternative narratives that confront patriarchal storytelling practices and examine struggles intrinsic to human existence. With no clear beginning, middle and end, the complexities that these stories present, like their storytelling predecessors, encourage the viewer to work through contemporary anxieties and make sense of the changes in the world around us.

dc3 Art Projects is proud to be one of four Canadian galleries selected for VOLTA NY 2017, and the only gallery invited from Western Canada. Join the conversation at #voltany2017 #10YearsofSoloFocus, and follow us @dc3artprojects and #dc3NY.

Tammy Salzl is an Edmonton-born, Montréal-based artist who received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from Concordia University in 2014. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in Canada, Germany, Mexico and the US. Salzl’s large-scale mixed media installation The Cleansing debuted at Galerie POPOP in Montréal in 2015, and was presented as a Feature Project at Art Toronto 2015. Unfamiliar Selves, a collaborative exhibition with Jude Griebel that debuted at Touchstones Nelson Museum of Art and History in Nelson, BC, Canada in 2015, opened at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie in Grande Prairie, AB, Canada in January 2017. In summer 2017, Salzl’s solo show, Into the Woods, will open at Two Rivers Gallery in Prince George, BC, Canada.

VOLTA NY

March 1–5, 2017
Pier 90, New York, NY 10019

VOLTA NY is the invitational fair of solo artist projects and is the American incarnation of the original Basel VOLTA show, which was founded in 2005 by three art dealers as a fair “by galleries, for galleries”.

Since its debut in New York in 2008, Artistic Director Amanda Coulson re-conceived the format as a rigorously curated, boutique event — along the lines of a sequence of intense studio visits versus a traditional trade show environment. Since then VOLTA NY showcases relevant contemporary art positions from emerging international artists, from cutting-edge trendsetters to next year’s rising stars. Coupled with its approachable solo-booth format, the VOLTA team has created a fair that is both accessible to younger art-lovers and beloved by seasoned collectors alike. By spotlighting artists through primarily solo projects, VOLTA NY refocuses the art fair experience back to its most fundamental point: the artists and their works. A beacon for creative discovery during Armory Arts Week, VOLTA NY is likewise aligned with some of the best and boldest local cuisine and design collaborators in the city.

In 2017, VOLTA NY will celebrate its decade edition as a solo-focused international contemporary art fair.
