During a month long residency at Greensboro North Carolina’s Elsewhere Museum, brothers Jude and Brendan Griebel revisited prairie boyhoods and ramshackle outbuildings through the haze of memory both whimsical and melancholic. Offered the entire contents of a three story former thrift shop and army surplus store to play in, they were drawn to a dollhouse that reminded them of the rundown old buildings they explored as children on prairie farms. Yellow House brings that forgotten toy and other broken and discarded items to life in an almost-narrative involving isolation, foreboding and more than a little humour.

Yellow House premieres at dc3 Art Projects with the launch of an artists’ book about the project and a series of 14 images created by Jude and Brendan Griebel. While Jude’s sculptural work and drawings have shown in previous group exhibitions at the gallery, this marks the first solo exhibition for both artists at dc3 Art Projects.

Yellow House will also include a number of Jude Griebel’s small sculptural works that were featured in our presentation at Art Toronto 2014. These resin sculptures were completed during a residency at the famed Spinnerei complex in Leipzig Germany and are part of an ongoing exploration of memory, museum and modelling practices through history and the combined humour and horror of contemporary life. Larger sculptures of resin and paper mache are also to be featured in the Art Gallery of Alberta’s Future Station: 2015 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art, presented in the AGA as well as an off-site exhibition in the ground floor window space of the historic Gibson Block.
